Valiant Entertainment is bringing back its Virtual Portfolio Review program for a second round and this time the initiative is meant for aspiring comic book writers only, the publisher announced today.
Senior editors Heather Antos and Lysa Hawkins from Valiant will conduct virtual one-on-one sessions with writers selected to have their work reviewed. Each one-on-one meeting will run about 10 minutes and 20 people in total will be chosen to have their work reviewed, according to a press release from the publisher.
"Breaking into comics and getting your foot in the door is no easy task for any creator — but I especially feel for new writers," Antos said. "Editors are often so busy it's hard to find time to read the scripts for their current projects — let alone read the work of new talent. Which is why it was really important to us to include writers in our next batch of portfolio reviews. We want to hear your voices. We want to see who's out there.”
Antos has edited Valiant’s flagship title “X-O Manowar,” “Shadowman,” and other Valiant titles. Hawkins, meanwhile, has been editor of “Bloodshot,” “Punk Mambo,” and other books. “Bloodshot” was recently adapted into an action-adventure film made by Columbia Pictures, Bona Film Group and Cross Creek Pictures. The movie, which was released this past March, stars Vin Diesel, Guy Pearce and Eiza González. "Just by the very nature of things, portfolio reviews tend to mostly be reviewing the artwork on the comic book page, not the content of the words themselves," Hawkins said. "That's why Valiant is super excited to be giving the writers the chance to shine. This is an opportunity that doesn't present itself often, so seize the day, you could be the next Stan Lee. Heather and I can't wait to see what you come up with."
To be considered for a review and one-on-one meeting, all submissions are due on Thursday, Sept. 3 at 5 p.m. EDT.
Portfolio reviews will be held on Sept. 10 from noon to 2 p.m. EDT and the following day, Sept. 11, again from noon to 2 p.m. EDT. Applicants chosen for the first day of reviews will be notified by 10 p.m. EDT on Sept. 9 and those selected for the second day will be notified no later than 10 p.m. EDT on Sept. 10.
Here are the instructions for those intending to submit:

Please note: Submissions should be no more than 20 comic pages, plus a credits/contact page. This can be a one-shot, combination of various scenes or short stories. The first round of Valiant’s Virtual Portfolio Review, which was geared for artists, colorists and letterers, was held in July, with meetings from July 8-9. The program was conceived as a result of the 2020 comics convention season being on hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
